Eurycomanone: why the percentage matters more than the ratio
Shop for Tongkat Ali and you meet a wall of numbers: 1:200, 10%, 2.4%. They look comparable. They are not — they measure different things, and only one of them tells you how much active compound you are actually getting.
This is a guide to what those numbers mean, why concentration has a sensible middle ground rather than a higher is better scale, and what to ask a seller before you buy.
What eurycomanone is
Eurycomanone is a quassinoid — one of a group of compounds found in the root of Eurycoma longifolia. The plant contains dozens of compounds, but eurycomanone is the most studied, which is why extracts are often standardised against it.
In laboratory studies it has been shown to support testosterone production, partly by limiting aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into oestrogen (Low et al., 2013). Researchers have also looked at its effect on the signalling hormones LH and FSH. As we say on how Tongkat Ali works, much of this is early-stage: the human trials are small and short, and individual responses vary.
Ratio and percentage answer different questions
An extract ratio such as 1:200 describes the manufacturing process — broadly, how much raw root went in relative to the powder that came out. It tells you the extract is concentrated. It does not, on its own, guarantee how much of any particular compound ended up in the finished product.
A percentage such as 2.4% eurycomanone describes the finished powder — how much of a named active compound is present, confirmed by analytical testing. That is what standardisation means, and it is why a standardised extract is consistent from batch to batch.
The two are not rivals. A good product can state both: the ratio tells you how it was made, the percentage tells you what is in it. The thing to be wary of is a ratio quoted instead of a percentage, with no analysis to back it up. Our plant extracts explained page covers how standardisation works in more detail.
Why more is not automatically better
It is tempting to read concentration as a simple scale where a bigger number wins. There are two reasons to be sceptical of that.
- Co-factors. Pushing concentration very high tends to strip out the other root compounds — glycosaponins and eurypeptides among them — that occur alongside eurycomanone in a full-spectrum extract. A more concentrated powder is not necessarily a more complete one.
- Regulatory caution. EFSA has raised questions about very high-dose, non-standardised preparations. Standardised extracts in the range used by published research sit well inside that caution, which is part of their appeal.
For context, the Malaysian standard MS 2409:2011 looks for eurycomanone levels typically between 0.8% and 1.9%. Extracts standardised a little above that range are commonly described as high-potency while still full-spectrum. It is a middle ground rather than a maximum.
What to ask before you buy
Whatever the number on the front of the label, the useful questions are the same:
- Is it a root extract, from mature trees — not stem or leaf?
- Is a eurycomanone percentage stated, and can the seller produce a certificate of analysis for the batch?
- Has it been tested by an independent, accredited laboratory such as SGS or Intertek for heavy metals, microbial contamination and adulterants?
- Can the seller tell you where the root was grown?
If a seller can quote a ratio but cannot produce an analysis, the ratio is the only thing they know about their own product.

The short version
Concentration is worth understanding, but it is not a leaderboard. A sensible extract is concentrated enough to be worth taking, standardised so that every batch is the same, and tested by somebody with no stake in the result. Those three things together matter far more than any single number on the front of the tub.
